Ingredients

  • 2 cups granulated sugar (400 g)
  • 4 large eggs
  • 1 tablespoon vanilla extract
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour (125 g)
  • 1 cup unsweetened cocoa powder (about 85 g)
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • ½ teaspoon baking powder
  • 1 cup semi-sweet chocolate chips (optional, ~170 g)
  • Powdered sugar, for dusting (optional)

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C) and line an 8 x 8-inch baking pan with parchment paper, lightly greasing it.
  2. Melt the butter over low heat and then stir in the granulated sugar until fully combined.
  3. Add eggs one at a time, whisking briskly after each addition, then stir in the vanilla extract.
  4. In a separate bowl, whisk together the flour, cocoa powder, salt, and baking powder.
  5. Fold the dry mixture into the wet mixture until just combined, then fold in chocolate chips if using.
  6. Pour the batter into the prepared pan and smooth the top. Bake for 25–30 minutes, checking at 22–25 minutes.
  7. Cool completely on a wire rack, then dust with powdered sugar if desired and cut into 16 squares.

Avoid overbaking and overmixing to maintain fudgy texture. Brownies taste better the next day as flavors meld.
