Description

Delightfully crispy and tender bites coated in cinnamon-sugar, these air-fried churros are a healthier twist on a classic treat they’re perfect for brunch or snacks.


Ingredients

  • 1 cup whole wheat flour
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon (plus extra for dusting)
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 cup unsweetened applesauce
  • 1/4 cup honey or maple syrup
  • 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • Cooking spray
  • About 2 tablespoons granulated sugar mixed with 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon (for dusting)

Instructions

  1. In a mixing bowl, combine whole wheat flour, baking powder, 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon, and salt; whisk to aerate.
  2. In another bowl, mix together applesauce, honey or maple syrup, and vanilla extract until smooth.
  3. Add wet ingredients to dry ingredients and mix gently until a soft dough forms.
  4. Preheat air fryer to 350°F (175°C) for 3–5 minutes.
  5. Form dough into bite-sized balls and place in air fryer basket, leaving gaps for air circulation.
  6. Lightly spray churro bites with cooking spray.
  7. Air fry for 8–10 minutes until golden brown, flipping halfway if necessary.
  8. Remove from air fryer and roll warm bites in cinnamon-sugar mixture.
  9. Serve immediately and enjoy!

Notes

These bites are best enjoyed fresh but can be stored up to 2 days at room temperature or 5 days in the fridge.
