Luxuriously smooth and less sweet than traditional frostings, this Russian Buttercream is perfect for cakes and cupcakes, evoking nostalgic family gatherings.
Ingredients

- 1 (14 oz / 396 g) can sweetened condensed milk
- 1 cup (227 g) unsalted butter, room temperature
- 1–2 teaspoons pure vanilla extract
- 1/4 teaspoon fine salt (optional)
Instructions
- In a stand mixer, beat the room-temperature butter on medium speed until creamy, about 2–3 minutes.
- Gradually add the sweetened condensed milk; continue beating until combined, then increase speed and beat for 3–5 minutes until smooth.
- Add vanilla extract and salt, beat for another 30 seconds.
- Fold in optional flavorings if desired.
- Use immediately, or chill for firmer consistency before piping.
Notes
For firmer buttercream, chill for 15–30 minutes and re-whip briefly before piping. Store leftovers in an airtight container for up to 7 days.
