Description

Delicious heart-shaped sugar cookies that are tender, buttery, and perfect for any celebration.


Ingredients

  • 2 ¾ cups (about 344 g) all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup (227 g) unsalted butter, softened
  • 1 cup (200 g) granulated sugar
  • 1 large egg
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • ½ teaspoon almond extract (optional)
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • ¼ teaspoon fine salt
  • Powdered sugar for dusting (optional)
  • Decorative icing or sprinkles (optional)

Instructions

  1. In a medium bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, and salt. Set aside.
  2. In a large bowl or stand mixer fitted with a paddle attachment, cream the softened butter and granulated sugar on medium speed until light and fluffy, about 2–3 minutes.
  3. Beat in the egg, vanilla extract, and almond extract (if using) until combined.
  4. Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet, mixing on low until just combined.
  5. Turn the dough onto a lightly floured surface, press into a disk, and wrap in plastic. Chill in the refrigerator for at least 1 hour.
  6. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Line baking sheets with parchment paper.
  7. Roll the chilled dough to about 1/4-inch thickness and cut into heart shapes. Transfer them to prepared baking sheets.
  8. Bake for 8–10 minutes, until edges are set and just beginning to turn golden. Cool on baking sheets for 2 minutes before transferring to a wire rack.
  9. Decorate as desired with icing, sprinkles, or powdered sugar.

Notes

Chill the dough to prevent spreading and keep edges crisp. Use a thin spatula for transferring cookies.
